  Saturday 30th
 

Another good day for passage, particularly Pink-footed Geese which mainly started in the afternoon and totalled 1150 by dusk. Other birds on the move south were; 11 Wigeon, 47 Teal, 1 Pintail, 1 Shoveler, 1 Scaup, 12 Eider, 32 Common Scoter, 3 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 55 Skylark, 1 Sand Martin, 41 Swallow, 10 House Martin, 1130 Meadow Pipit, 3 Rock Pipit, 4 Grey Wagtail, 13 alba Wagtail, 4 Tree Sparrow, 1 Chaffinch, 185 Greenfinch, 267 Goldfinch, 1 Siskin, 274 Linnet, 4 Redpoll, 36 Reed Bunting.

 

Grounded birds included; 1 Short-eared Owl, 1 Redstart, 1 Stonechat, 3 Wheatear, 12 Song Thrush, 1 Mistle Thrush, 1 Sedge Warbler, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 6 Chiffchaff, 14 Goldcrest, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Pied Flycatcher, 12 Chaffinch, 1 Yellowhammer.

 

The best birds of the day were seen at sea; a Sabine’s Gull seen off the sea at Beacon Ponds flew off north, while a 1st year Glaucous Gull flew south from Beacon Ponds and across the Humber, other seabirds included; 32 Red-throated Diver, 12 Cormorant, 1 Pomarine Skua blogging, 2 Arctic Skua, 1 Bonxie, c.2000 Little Gull, 85 Sandwich Tern, 759 Common Tern, 5 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern, 2 Black Tern. Moths trapped overnight included 5 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Swordgrass, 3 Rush Veneer.

   
  Friday 29th
 

A good day for passage, with good numbers of finches and also Pink-footed Geese. The sea also produced a few birds.

 

Birds flying south included; 1 Grey Heron, 724 Pink-footed Geese, 3 Wigeon, 1 Gadwall, 6 Teal, 2 Mallard, 2 Pintail, 1 Tufted Duck, 1 Eider, 13 Common Scoter, 3 Sparrowhawk, 46 Skylark, 136 Swallow, 19 House Martin, 824 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 4 Grey Wagtail, 28 alba Wagtail, 7 Rook, 6 House Sparrow, 27 Tree Sparrow, 1 Chaffinch, 168 Greenfinch, 734 Goldfinch, 1 Siskin, 787 Linnet, 1 Redpoll, 24 Reed Bunting. At sea were; 53 Red-throated Diver, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 60 Gannet, 2 Shag, 1 Pomarine Skua blogging off the sea-watch hut, 2 Arctic Skua, 7 Bonxie, 2000+ Little Gull, 6 Sandwich Tern, 1 Roseate Tern, 447 Common Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern, 1 Black Tern.

  Thursday 28th
 

A much quieter day, with passage a lot lighter than yesterday and even fewer grounded migrants.

 

Southerly passage today saw; 141 Pink-footed Geese, 8 Wigeon, 15 Teal, 18 Pintail, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Eider, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Common Snipe, 1 Swift, 6 Sand Martin, 130 Swallow, 76 House Martin, 163 Meadow Pipit, 4 Rock Pipit, 2 flava Wagtail, 7 alba Wagtail, 1 Mistle Thrush, 18 Tree Sparrow, 1 Chaffinch, 66 Greenfinch, 142 Goldfinch, 2 Siskin, 184 Linnet, 1 Lapland Bunting and 1 Reed Bunting.

 

Grounded birds included a Water Rail on the road at the Sheep Field, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Rock Pipit, 8 Whinchat, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Blackcap, 1 Garden Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 10 Goldcrest, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 4 Chaffinch.   Wednesday 27th
 

A good day for southerly passage with a light south-westerly wind. Grounded migrant numbers dwindled and there was little activity at sea.

 

Birds passing south included; 31 Pink-footed Geese, 15 Wigeon, 21 Teal, 10 Pintail + 5 in, 3 Tufted Duck, 11 Common Scoter, 2 Kestrel, 1 Ruff, 1 Whimbrel, 5 Greenshank, 25 Skylark, 4 Sand Martin, 1177 Swallow, 283 House Martin, 2051 Meadow Pipit, 4 Rock Pipit, 4 flava Wagtail, 6 Grey Wagtail, 27 alba Wagtail, 13 Carrion Crow, 8 House Sparrow, 48 Tree Sparrow, 7 Chaffinch, 198 Greenfinch, 288 Goldfinch, 24 Siskin, 865 Linnet, 12 Redpoll, 31 Reed Bunting.

  Tuesday 26th
 

Fresh westerly winds didn’t produce the passage expected, with just a small movement of birds; 3 Grey Heron, 59 Pink-footed Geese, 5 Teal, 8 Eider, 2 Common Buzzard U-turned, 5 Kestrel, 1 Swift, 34 Skylark, 280 Swallow, 450 Meadow Pipit, 7 Rock Pipit, 3 flava Wagtail, 8 Grey Wagtail, 9 alba Wagtail, 16 Tree Sparrow, 1 Brambling, 24 Greenfinch, 10 Goldfinch, 3 Siskin, 95 Linnet, 6 Reed Bunting. Also 80 Red Admiral flew south and a Grey Squirrel ran north past the Narrows!!

 

Grounded birds had dwindled and included; a Short-eared Owl, 3 flava Wagtail, 1 Redstart, 6 Whinchat, 3 Wheatear, 6 Song Thrush, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Whitethroat, 3 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 24 Chaffinch, 5 Brambling, 6 Siskin. While on the sea were; 50 Red-throated Diver, 42 Gannet, 22 Cormorant, 3 Arctic Skua, 1 Long-tailed Skua north at 08.50, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 500 Little Gull, 50 Kittiwake, 200 Common Tern.

 

Immigrant moths trapped overnight were 2 Diamond-back Moth, 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 4 Dark Swordgrass, 6 Pearly Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Silver Y.

   
  Monday 25th
 

Light but persistent rain all day and light south-easterly winds, but surprisingly good day for passage, particularly Meadow Pipits which numbered 6400 flying south by the end of the day. Other birds moving south were; 15 Pink-footed Geese (1st of autumn), 4 Teal, 7 Pintail in, 1 Skylark, 222 Swallow, 2 Tree Pipit, 4 Rock Pipit, 3 flava Wagtail, 7 Grey Wagtail, 12 alba Wagtail, 55 Starling, 8 Tree Sparrow, 2 Chaffinch, 2 Brambling, 24 Greenfinch, 27 Goldfinch, 96 Linnet and 4 Reed Bunting.

 

The Yellow-browed Warbler at the Blue Bell was still present and there were some new grounded migrants: 1 Rock Pipit, 2 Redstart, 12 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 16 Song Thrush, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Whitethroat, 6 Garden Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 8 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 25 Goldcrest, 4 Spotted Flycatcher, 3 Pied Flycatcher, 31 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling.

 

There was a bit more passage at sea including; 100 Red-throated Diver, 1 Fulmar, 3 Manx Shearwater, 129 Gannet, 11 Arctic Skua, 2 Long-tailed Skua (08.00 and 08.40), 5 Bonxie, c.200 Little Gull, 5 Lesser B.B.Gull, 20 Sandwich Tern , 48 Common Tern , 1 Arctic Tern. Moths trapped overnight were; 2 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 Silver Y.

   
  Sunday 24th
 

A fairly decent day with a few new grounded migrants, including two first for the autumn – Ring Ouzel at the Warren and Jack Snipe on Clubley’s Scrape, while three Yellow-browed Warblers were found ( Southfield Farm, Potato Fields and the Warren which was ringed), also another at Sammy’s Point. Other notable migrants included; a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Tree Pipit, 1 Rock Pipit, 2 flava Wagtail, 5 Redstart, 17 Whinchat, 1 Wheatear, 43 Song Thrush, 2 Reed Warbler, 7 Whitethroat, 9 Garden Warbler, 4 Blackcap, 4 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 46 Chaffinch, 3 Brambling, 20 Goldfinch, 5 Siskin, 12 Reed Bunting. Birds moving south were; 35 Wigeon, 90 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 44 Common Scoter, 1 Velvet Scoter, 1 Marsh Harrier, 15 Skylark, 200 Swallow, 150 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 1 flava Wagtail, 4 Grey Wagtail, 5 alba Wagtail, 6 Tree Sparrow, 2 Greenfinch, 12 Goldfinch, 10 Reed Bunting.

  Saturday 23rd
 

A better day for birding than the last few days, however disappointing considering easterly winds. Grounded birds were; 1 Short-eared Owl, 5 Tree Pipit, 22 Robin, 5 Redstart, 13 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 8 Song Thrush, 1 Sedge Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 3 Chiffchaff, 6 Willow Warbler, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Treecreeper at the Crown, 51 Chaffinch, 4 Brambling, 2 Siskin.

 

Birds flying south were; 9 Wigeon, 9 Teal, 1 Pintail, 4 Shoveler, 26 Common Scoter, 1 Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 15 Skylark, 16 Swallow, 665 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 2 flava Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 alba Wagtail, 4 Jackdaw, 10 Tree Sparrow, 2 Brambling, 57 Greenfinch, 4 Siskin, 61 Linnet and 8 Reed Bunting. Seabirds seen included; 15 Red-throated Diver, 2 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Manx Shearwater, 26 Gannet, 3 Arctic Skua, 2 Mediterranean Gull, 59 Little Gull, 105 Common Tern, 10 Arctic Tern, 5 Razorbill.

 

Other birds of note were; 3 Greylag Goose, 12 Brent Geese, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 8 Ruff. North of the area the bird of the day was a showy Yellow-browed Warbler in Kilnsea. Moths trapped overnight; 5 Rush Veneer, 2 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw.

   
  Friday 22nd
 

Rain all day made birding difficult, and very few new birds in until late afternoon when there was a small influx of Song Thrushes and the odd other migrant.

 

Birds of interest seen today were; 1 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Wigeon, 24 Teal, 1 Pintail, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Water Rail, 4 Curlew Sandpiper, 10 Greenshank, 99 Little Gull, 1 Tree Pipit, 187 Meadow Pipit south, 2 flava Wagtail, 21 Robin, 6 Whinchat, the first Stonechat of the autumn, 1 Wheatear, 24 Song Thrush, 1 Mistle Thrush, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 5 Willow Warbler, 5 Goldcrest, 1 Treecreeper, 54 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling at Kew, 8 Siskin.

 

Moths were; 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 3 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 1 Silver Y.

   
  Thursday 21st
 

quiet day, although a few new migrants in. A fresh S-SE wind all day with clear sunny skies.

 

Birds of the note seen were; a Little Egret south, 8 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Ruff, 1 Bonxie, 2 Little Gull, a Kingfisher on Canal Scrape, 1 Tree Pipit, 85 Meadow Pipit south, the first Rock Pipit of the autumn south, 2 Redstart, 11 Whinchat, 1 Wheatear, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 4 Goldcrest, 1 Pied Flycatcher, 42 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling.

 

Migrant moths trapped overnight were; 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 2 Dark Swordgrass, 8 Pearly Underwing, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Silver Y.

   
  Wednesday 20th
 

A poor day with a blustery S wind reaching force 6 at times keeping any grounded migrants in cover and stopping any passage the only highlight was a Treecreeper at the Crown car park, other birds of interest were 6 Grey Partridge (Church Field), 2 Curlew Sandpiper, 5 Snipe, 2 Bonxie, 2 Swift S, 6 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear and 2 Goldcrest. Migrant moths were also poor with 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 2 Dark Sword Grass and 5 Pearly Underwing.

  Tuesday 19th
 

With a stiff SW wind passage was the main event again today with the highlight being an Osprey S at 11.14, other birds heading S included a Marsh Harrier, 11 Kestrel, single Hobby, Lapwing & Snipe, 240 Swallow, 241 House Martin, 791 Meadow Pipit, 6 Flava Wagtail, 12 Alba Wagtail, 2 Siskin, 42 Linnet and a Snow Bunting.

 

Other notable sightings were 18 Brent Geese (Chalk Bank), 7 Grey Partridge (Church Field), 2 Water Rail (Canal Scrape), 2 Little Stint, 3 Greenshank, a Common Sandpiper, 1 Swift blogging, a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Kew), 1 Tree Pipit, 3 Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 8 Goldcrest, yesterdays Brambling (Point) and 11 Twite on the beach by the Lighthouse and then were seen by post 40.

 

Migrant moths trapped today were down on recent days with 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 4 Dark Sword Grass, 4 Pearly Underwing, and 1 Scarce Bordered Straw.

   
  Monday 18th
 

Another good day for passage, with a wide selection of birds moving south in the light westerly- south westerly wind. Not as many grounded migrants today. Birds on the move south were; 14 Wigeon, 8 Teal, 8 Pintail, 14 Common Scoter, 2 Marsh Harrier, 1 Kestrel, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 16 Skylark, 1 Sand Martin, 647 Swallow, 30 House Martin, 1 Tree Pipit, 3611 Meadow Pipit, 7 flava Wagtail, 10 Grey Wagtail, 33 alba Wagtail, 4 Dunnock, 1 Song Thrush, 4 Rook, 7 House Sparrow, 80 Tree Sparrow, 2 Chaffinch, 82 Greenfinch, 29 Goldfinch, 2 Siskin, 196 Linnet, 1 Snow Bunting, 11 Reed Bunting.

 

Other birds of note seen were; 19 Brent Geese, 1 Merlin, 1 Hobby, 1 Water Rail, 1 Little Stint, 3 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Arctic Tern , 2 Black Tern, 1 Kingfisher on Canal Scrape, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker at Blue Bell, 1 Tree Pipit, 1 Redstart, 9 Whinchat, 4 Wheatear, 4 Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcap, the Yellow-browed Warbler was seen again briefly in the Churchyard, 3 Willow Warbler, 8 Goldcrest, 1 Pied Flycatcher, and a Brambling at the Point.

  Sunday 17th
 

A misty start but visibility much better than yesterday, the mist burnt off by lunch but still very hazy and horizons not visible. There was no wind to talk of, maybe a very light westerly wind and this was all that was needed to get the first big movement of Meadow Pipits, a total of 9,800 moved south during the day.

 

Other birds moving south were; 2 Little Egret, 61 Wigeon, 189 Teal, 11 Pintail north, 5 Shoveler, 2 Tufted Duck north, 64 Common Scoter + 98 north, 17 Kestrel, 1 Little Stint, 8 Common Snipe, 1 Skylark, 3 Sand Martin, 403 Swallow, 7 House Martin, 10 Tree Pipit, 21 flava Wagtail, 4 Grey Wagtail, 14 alba Wagtail, 12 House Sparrow, 2 Tree Sparrow, 13 Chaffinch, 19 Greenfinch, 5 Goldfinch, 64 Linnet, 2 Snow Bunting, 12 Reed Bunting. There were grounded migrants; a Kingfisher, 200 Meadow Pipit, 10 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 13 Redstart, 19 Whinchat, 7 Wheatear, 22 Song Thrush, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 8 Whitethroat, 13 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 3 Chiffchaff, 14 Willow Warbler, 7 Goldcrest, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 52 Chaffinch, 15 Reed Bunting.

 

Seabirds seen were; 15 Red-throated Diver, 5 Fulmar, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 138 Gannet, 3 Arctic Skua, 6 Bonxie, 93 Little Gull, 87 Common Tern, 5 Guillemot, 1 Razorbill. Other birds of note were; a Honey Buzzard west over North Field at 14.30, a bird reported earlier than this was not substantiated! , 2 Water Rail, 1 Little Stint, 10 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Spotted Redshank, a Barn Owl. The highlight of the day for one observer at least was a Camberwell Beauty flying over Kilnsea Road, while moths trapped overnight included a Clifden Nonpareil, 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 1 Hummingbird Hawk-moth, 11 Scarce Bordered Straw, 6 Dark Swordgrass, 2 Pearly Underwing, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 5 Rush Veneer, 7 Diamond-back, 7 Silvery Y. And a tenerel Red-veined Darter was seen on Clubley’s Scrape.

  Saturday 16th
 

A foggy day that never cleared, but despite this a decent arrival of several species, especially Chaffinch which totalled 224 and the highlight of the day being three Honey Buzzards which all flew south.

 

Some new grounded migrants included the first Yellow-browed Warbler of the year at the Crown, a Corncrake found dead on the road was thought to have collided with the powerlines then run over , a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Tree Pipit, 90 Meadow Pipit, 9 flava Wagtail including a non flavissima at the Point (in all probability a Grey headed), 6 Redstart, 24 Whinchat, 7 Wheatear, 15 Song Thrush, 1 Redwing in Scrape Field, 1 Grasshopper Warbler at Middle Camp, 8 Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 9 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, 4 Pied Flycatcher, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 15 Reed Bunting.

 

Birds moving south were; 126 Wigeon, 193 Teal, 14 Common Scoter, 8 Ruff, 131 Meadow Pipit + 30 in, 3 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 2 alba Wagtail, 1 Siskin. At sea were; 11 Red-throated Diver, 1 Shag, 1 Arctic Skua, 2 Bonxie, 19 Little Gull. Moths caught were 1 Hummingbird Hawk-moth, 5 Scarce Bordered Straw, 5 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Swordgrass, 5 Diamond-back Moth. Birds seen north of the area included a Yellow-browed Warbler and 4 Brambling in Easington.

  Friday 15th
 

A day which produced a few good seabirds, a few more common migrants and some unusual Meadow Pipit movements. The day started off with a Corncrake being flushed at the Warren and then flew into Clubley’s Field, other grounded birds included; 1 Short-eared Owl, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Tree Pipit, 200 Meadow Pipit, 16 flava Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Redstart, 10 Whinchat, 4 Wheatear, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 4 Chiffchaff, 10 Willow Warbler, 6 Goldcrest, 4 Pied Flycatcher, 1 Lesser Redpoll.

 

Birds moving south were; 1 Little Egret U-turned, 24 Wigeon, 138 Teal, 2 Shoveler north, 1 Tufted Duck, 103 Common Scoter, 60 Oystercatcher, 3 Skylark in, 29 Swallow in, 2 Tree Pipit, 222 Meadow Pipit +400+ in, 8 flava Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Reed Bunting +6 in.

Another day of south-easterlies after a night of rain. Very little passage, but a few new grounded migrants with several turning up in the evening. Seabirds were; 15 Red-throated Diver, 4 Fulmar, 106 Gannet, 4 Arctic Skua, 3 Little Gull, 93 Sandwich Tern, 181 Common Tern, 1 Arctic Tern.

 

Birds moving south were; 24 Wigeon, 140 Teal, 3 Eider, 39 Common Scoter, 1 Marsh Harrier, 12 Knot, 17 Sanderling, 23 Dunlin, 5 Swift, 13 Swallow, 2 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 2 alba Wagtail.

 

Grounded migrants; 1 Swift, 1 Tree Pipit, 100 Meadow Pipit, 2 flava Wagtail, 1 Redstart, 12 Whinchat, 7 Wheatear, 5 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, the Firecrest from Beacon Lane ventured south into the recording area, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 9 Pied Flycatcher, 19 Reed Bunting. Moths trapped overnight included; 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 10 Dark Swordgrass, 2 Rusty Veneer.

  Wednesday 13th
 

Still south-easterlies, and rain overnight again, but yet again just a turn over of a few common migrants. Tern roost was practically non-existent but there was still some duck movement. Birds moving south; 2 Grey Heron, 1 Brent Goose, 108 Wigeon, 219 Teal + 4 out, 4 Pintail +2 in, 2 Shoveler, 1 Common Scoter + 17 N, 1 Marsh Harrier, 6 Oystercatcher, 10 Dunlin, 27 Redshank, 3 Stock Dove U-turned, 2 Common Swift, 2 Sand Martin, 92 Swallow, 26 House Martin, 167 Meadow Pipit, 8 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 3 alba Wagtail, 14 Rook U-turned, 7 Goldfinch, 7 Linnet.

 

Grounded migrants; 2 Swift, 15 Meadow Pipit, 5 flava Wagtail, 9 Whinchat, 1 Fieldfare, 5 Lesser Whitethroat, 16 Whitethroat, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff, 6 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, 4 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 28 Linnet, 28 Reed Bunting.

 

Seabirds seen included; 2 Great Crested Grebe, 19 Gannet, 5 Arctic Skua, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 4 Little Gull, 31 Kittiwake, 74 Sandwich Tern, 407 Common Tern, 5 Arctic Tern, 2 Black Tern, 360 Guillemot. The Firecrest was still on Beacon Lane. Moths caught included 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Pearly Underwing, 2 Dark Swordgrass, 2 Diamond Back, and a Red-green Carpet was a new moth for Spurn.

After rain during the night and south-easterly winds, hopes were high, however, very few new migrants materialised, but there was a steady trickle of passage to keep interest going.

 

Birds moving south included; 128 Wigeon, 449 Teal, 18 Pintail, 4 Shoveler, 1 Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Common Buzzard +1 U-turned, 1 Kestrel, 1 Ruff, 1 Stock Dove, 2 Swift, 14 Sand Martin, 395 Swallow, 180 House Martin, 176 Meadow Pipit, 25 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 4 alba Wagtail, 6 Starling, 3 Goldfinch. Grounded birds were; 40 Meadow Pipit, 1 flava Wagtail, 33 Robin, 2 Redstart, 12 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 1 Mistle Thrush, 6 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 10 Willow Warbler, 6 Goldcrest, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 15 Reed Bunting.

 

At sea were; 1 Red-throated Diver, 12 Gannet, 4 Arctic Skua, 3 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Little Gull, 144 Sandwich Tern, 6 Roseate Tern, 2172 Common Tern, 18 Arctic Tern, 10 Black Tern. Other birds seen included; 1 Tufted Duck, 614 Sanderling, 8 Curlew Sandpiper, 50,000+ Knot, 6,000 Dunlin, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 9 Greenshank. While the Firecrest was still on Beacon Lane.

Another day of south-easterlies and clear skies, with a few new arrivals during the day. There was also a reasonable passage particularly ducks.

 

Birds moving south were; 22 Shelduck, 80 Wigeon, 429 Teal, 3 Mallard, 10 Pintail, 5 Shoveler, 46 Common Scoter, 4 Marsh Harrier, 1 Merlin, 2 Oystercatcher, 15 Knot, 15 Sanderling, 13 Dunlin, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Curlew, 1 Swift, 21 Sand Martin, 536 Swallow, 60 House Martin, 134 Meadow Pipit, 16 flava Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 alba Wagtail, 21 Greenfinch, 35 Linnet and 5 Reed Bunting. Grounded birds were; 9 Grey Heron, a flava Wagtail, 22 Robin, 1 Redstart, 7 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 1 Fieldfare, 7 Lesser Whitethroat, 12 Whitethroat, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Pied Flycatcher, an Ortolan Bunting on the parade ground at the Point early evening.

 

Seabirds seen included; 1 Red-throated Diver, 1 Fulmar, 10 Arctic Skua, 2 Bonxie, 1 Little Gull, c.500 Common Tern. Waders seen were; 50,000 Knot, 4 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Whimbrel and 15 Greenshank. Birds seen north of the area: 1 Wood Warbler, 1 Firecrest and 1 Lapland Bunting on Beacon Lane and an Ortolan Bunting on Green Lane Easington. Immigrant moths were 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 1 Silver Y.

  Sunday 10th
 

Much the same as yesterday with another clear out overnight and then a few birds dropping in during the day. The sea was very quiet, producing just 2 Red-throated Diver, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Arctic Skua, 4 Mediterranean Gull, 10 Little Gull, 700 Common Tern, 1 Arctic Tern and 1 Black Tern.

 

Birds moving south included; a Little Egret which U-turned, 10 Wigeon, 15 Teal, 2 Marsh Harrier, a Kingfisher, 6 Sand Martin and 67 Swallow.

 

Birds of note were; 1 Curlew Sandpiper, a Wryneck on the Canal bank flew into Walker Butts, a Tree Pipit in the Triangle, 6 flava Wagtails, including a bird at the Point showing characters of the race thunbergi (Grey headed Wagtail), 23 Robin, 4 Redstart, 9 Whinchat, 5 Wheatear, 1 Fieldfare, 4 Reed Warbler, 11 Lesser Whitethroat, 13 Whitethroat, 3 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 10 Willow Warbler, 1 Goldcrest, 4 Pied Flycatcher, 18 Reed Bunting. A Firecrest was on Beacon Lane and 3 Black Tern on Beacon Ponds.

   
  Saturday 9th
 

Most birds had cleared out overnight, there was a small arrival of new birds from mid-morning, but generally poor considering the fresh south-easterly winds. At sea were; 3 Red-throated Diver, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 53 Fulmar, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Balearic Shearwater, 8 Manx Shearwater, a Petrel sp. flew south distantly in the evening, 4 Arctic Skua, 5 Bonxie, 20 Little Gull, 5 Roseate Tern, 2000 Common Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern.

 

There was hardly any southerly passage and birds of note seen were; 17 Wigeon, 25 Teal, 4 Pintail, 3 Sparrowhawk, 2 Merlin, 1 Ruff, 1 Spotted Redshank, a Short-eared Owl, 5 Redstart, 2 Whinchat, 4 Wheatear, 1 Sedge Warbler, 2 Reed Warbler, 6 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Wood Warbler at the Crown, 2 Chiffchaff, 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Pied Flycatcher.

 

North of the area a Red-backed Shrike was found north of Easington Lagoon and a Common Rosefinch was seen briefly opposite ‘Two Hoots’. Immigrant moths caught overnight were; 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 1 Diamond-back moth.

  Friday 8th
 

A good days birding all round, with good passage on the sea, a few birds moving south and an arrival of common migrants once the wind turned slightly east, with a couple of scarce birds thrown in as well.

 

The sea produced 37 Red-throated Diver, 1109 Fulmar, 50 Sooty Shearwater, 36 Manx Shearwater, 650 Gannet, 3 Shag, 57 Arctic Skua, 15 Bonxie, 1 Mediterranean Gull, 16 Little Gull, 1426 Kittiwake, 5 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern, 3 Puffin.

 

Birds moving south included; 1 Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron in, 8 Wigeon +16 north, 15 Teal +105 north, 3 Pintail, 2 Sparrowhawk, 1 Common Buzzard, 5 Swallow, 400 Meadow Pipit, 7 flava Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 3 Greenfinch, 5 Linnet, 4 Reed Bunting. Grounded birds were; 1 Tree Pipit, 40 Meadow Pipit, 5 flava Wagtail, 1 Bluethroat at the Warren and then feeding on Clubley’s Scrape until dusk, 1 Redstart, 4 Whinchat, 22 Wheatear, 4 Reed Warbler, 5 Lesser Whitethroat, 19 Whitethroat, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 15 Willow Warbler, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 5 Pied Flycatcher, 1 Common Rosefinch in the Church Field then flew east.

  Thursday 7th
 

A quieter day, with strong NW- N winds, the sea produced a few birds as expected, but little else new in. A few birds came in off and continued west notably; 9 Swallow, 13 Meadow Pipit and 6 flava Wagtail. Birds moving south included 15 Wigeon, 15 Teal, 2 Pintail in, 2 Shoveler, 3 Pochard, 4 Common Scoter, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Hobby, 49 Oystercatcher, 1 Skylark, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 alba Wagtail, 3 Linnet.

 

Seabirds included; 35 Red-throated Diver, 35 Fulmar, 30 Sooty Shearwater, 18 Manx Shearwater, 1 Pomarine Skua, 78 Arctic Skua, a probably Long-tailed Skua, 16 Bonxie, 63 Little Gull, 200 Kittiwake, 5 Roseate Tern, 1 Black Tern.

 

Other birds of note were; 1 Merlin, 5 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Ruff, 8 Greenshank, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Tree Pipit, 80 Meadow Pipit, 12 flava Wagtail, 5 Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 4 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Spotted Flycatcher. Moths seen included 3 Scarce Bordered Straw, 7 Dark Sword Grass, 1 Rush Veneer, 1 Rusty-dot Pearl, 2 Pearly Underwing, 13 Silver Y. A Dolphin sp. was seen offshore.

   
  Wednesday 6th
 

A very similar day to yesterday, with very similar species on the move, although hirundines and pipits were in much larger numbers. The Terns were still going to roost in good numbers, with the Roseate Tern record being broke for the second day in a row. Birds moving south included; 6 Wigeon, 119 Teal, 30 Common Scoter, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Osprey at 12.00, 6 Kestrel, 9 Oystercatcher, 3 Curlew Sandpiper and 21 Common Snipe in, 1 Black-tailed Godwit in, 5 Bar-tailed Godwit, 6 Whimbrel, 7 Swift, 150 Sand Martin, 4720 Swallow, 2700 House Martin, 1 Tree Pipit, 228 Meadow Pipit, 67 flava Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail, 4 alba Wagtail, 4 Rook, 7 Carrion Crow, 11 Greenfinch, 13 Goldfinch, 41 Linnet, 1 Yellowhammer, 2 Reed Bunting, 1 Corn Bunting.

 

Grounded birds were; 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 60 Meadow Pipit, 22 flava Wagtail, 1 Whinchat, 6 Wheatear, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 4 Spotted Flycatcher.

 

Birds at sea included; 4 Red-throated Diver, 2 Fulmar, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 38 Arctic Skua, 3 Bonxie, 9 Little Gull, 527 Sandwich Tern, 23 Roseate Tern, 10,000 Common Tern, 89 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern, 17 Black Tern, 200 Guillemot on sea. North of the area was a Wood Sandpiper and a Little Stint. Moths caught were 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 7 Rush Veneer, 6 Diamond Back.

   
  Tuesday 5th
 

With much better weather conditions apart from a drizzle start a few more migrants were found with some light passage south, as well as the usual Tern passage making it a rather pleasant days birding with plenty of sunny spells.

 

Birds heading south included 2 Teal, an Osprey at 10.50, 1 Kestrel, 3 Whimbrel, 3 Swift, 77 Sand Martin, 453 Swallow, 150 House Martin, 26 Meadow Pipit, 18 Flava Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail & 28 Greenfinch whilst grounded birds of note were; 845 Shelduck, 4 Gadwall, a Pintail (Humber), 2 Curlew Sandpiper, 8 Greenshank, a Yellow-legged Gull (Crown), 2 Tree Pipit (Warren), 62 Flava Wagtail, 2 Redstart, 3 Whinchat, 5 Wheatear, a Garden Warbler, 5 Spotted Flycatcher, a Pied Flycatcher (Blue Bell)

 

At sea there were 4 Red-throated Diver, 1 Bonxie, 2 Little Gull, 11 LBB Gull, 213 Sandwich Tern, 18 Roseate Tern, 11.000 Common Tern, 47 Arctic Tern, 1 Little Tern and 21 Black Tern. Migrant moths also picked up today with 4 Scarce Bordered Straw, 34 Rush Veneer, 2 Rusty-dot Pearl, 9 Dark Sword Grass and a Clouded Yellow was seen near Big Hedge.

   
  Monday 4th
 

With the wind easing down today to a force 2 W-SW by the afternoon with sunny periods more birds showed themselves although there were few passerines but at least a couple of highlights.

 

Tern passage was once again the main highlight with 72 Sandwich, 10 Roseate including 3 juveniles, 11.700 Common Tern, 85 Arctic and 15 Black Tern, other birds noted at sea were a Manx Shearwater, 17 Teal S, 17 Oystercatcher S, 2 Ruff S, 1 Bonxie, an adult Med Gull, 5 Little Gull in and c200 Guillemot on the sea.

 

Other birds of note included 3 Marsh Harrier S, an Osprey S at 10.25, 1 Avocet S onto the Humber, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, a Long-eared Owl (Point), 19 Swift, a Tree Pipit S, 6 Whinchat, a Wheatear and a Spotted Flycatcher (Point). At Beacon Lagoons there was a Little Stint, 1 Wood Sandpiper and a Roseate Tern. The only moth of note was a Scarce Bordered Straw.

   
  Sunday 3rd
 

A poor day due to a force 5-6 SW-W wind with some heavy showers especially in the afternoon keeping birds well hidden.

 

The Tern passage was about the only notable birding worth doing with 45 Sandwich, 3 Roseate, 18.000 Common, 23 Arctic and 27 Black Tern. Other birds of note were 2 Marsh Harrier S, 2 Curlew Sandpiper & 5 Greenshank (Humber), 23 Swift, 2 Whinchat (New Road), 13 Whitethroat & 1 Willow Warbler. At Beacon Lagoons there were 2 Pintail & a Little Stint.

   
  Saturday 2nd
 

Activity picked up a little with some passage in the south-westerly winds, but not as good as expected. Birds moving south were 7 Wigeon, 45 Teal, 2 Pintail + 13 in, 1 Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Swift, 53 Sand Martin, 363 Swallow, 39 House Martin, 3 Meadow Pipit, 19 flava Wagtail, 49 Tree Sparrow, 12 Greenfinch and 6 Linnet.

 

Grounded birds were 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Tree Pipit, 20 flava Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Wheatear, 4 Willow Warbler, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Corn Bunting. At sea were 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Fulmar, 1 Manx Shearwater, 120 Gannet, 9 Cormorant, 26 Arctic Skua, 2 Bonxie, 3400 Black-headed Gull, 1 Roseate Tern, c.10.000 Common Tern, 60 Arctic Tern, 12 Black Tern, 15 Auk sp., 9 Guillemot, 4 Razorbill.

 

Other birds of interest were a Shoveler and 5 Curlew Sandpiper, while at Beacon Ponds were 2 Avocet, 1 Little Stint and 4 Mediterranean Gulls. The moth traps produced 2 Scarce Bordered Straw, 1 Bordered Straw, 4 Rush Veneer, 5 Dark Swordgrass.

   
  Friday 1st
 

Another very poor day for birding at Spurn, with hardly any passage, or migrants and very few roosting waders, but the evening tern movement saved the day, being the third best of the autumn.

 

Birds of interest today were; 2 Red-throated Diver, 2 Fulmar, 1 Wigeon, 1 Pintail, 11 Common Snipe, 1 Bonxie, 2 Little Gull, 98 Sandwich Tern, 5 Roseate Tern, 14,300 Common Tern, 68 Arctic Tern, 21 Black Tern, 3 Swift, 154 Sand Martin, 94 Swallow, 28 flava Wagtail, 2 Whinchat,1 Wheatear, 1 Willow Warbler.
