31st March 2016 - Thursday

Early frost but plenty of long sunny periods albeit with a chilly force 3-1 N wind.
Migration Watch: 0700-1200.

Quieter southerly movement saw vizmig totals of 2 Grey Heron 2 Stock Dove, 23 Wood Pigeon, 1 Sand Martin north, 19 Meadow Pipit with 23 in/off then west, 6 Alba Wagtail, 1 Fieldfare, 13 Jackdaw, 9 Rook with 12 in/off, 6 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling, 11 Greenfinch, 7 Goldfinch, 1 Siskin, 49 Linnet, 5 Yellowhammer. Over the sea 2 Wigeon, 1 Red throated Diver, 4 Cormorant and 35 Black headed Gull.
1 Black Brant was again on the Humber early morning with 600 Brent plus 2 pale bellied Brent.
In the area 12 Greylag Geese, 67 Shelduck, 6 Teal, 1 Merlin, Common Buzzard blogging, 300 Grey Plover, 2 Lapwing, 1 Short eared Owl, 1 Black Redstart, 9 Wheatear, 9 Redwing, 4 Chiff-chaff, Siberian Chiff-chaff Easington sewage works, 6 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 200 Starling, 6 Goldfinch and 1 Siskin.
The Seratine Bat was flying about during the day at the New Observatory.

Ringing: 1 Wood Pigeon, 1 Blackbird, 1 Redwing, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Siskin, 2 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling, 2 Goldfinch, 1 Greenfinch.

30th March 2016 - Wednesday

A chilly start but plenty of long Sunny periods with rhe odd shower and a force 3-1 W wind.
Seawatch: 0645-1200.

A decent southerly movement saw vizmig totals of 3 Sparrowhawk, 4 Stock Dove, 56 Wood Pigeon, 1 Skylark, 29 Meadow Pipit with 357 in/off then west, 1 Rock Pipit, 10 Alba Wagtail, 8 Jackdaw, 32 Rook, 9 Carrion Crow, 110 Starling, 18 Chaffinch, 5 Greenfinch, 7 Goldfinch, 5 Siskin, 51 Linnet, 1 Lapland Bunting west past sammys, 3 Yellowhammer, 3 Reed Bunting and 2 Corn Bunting. Over the sea 15 Common Scoter, 2 Red throated Diver, 1 Gannet and 33 Black headed Gull.
1 Black Brant was on the Humber early morning with 800 Brent plus 2 pale bellied Brent.
In the area 11 Greylag Geese, 60 Shelduck,26 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall,32 Teal, 3 Goldeneye, 12 Little Egret, 1 Water Rail, 1 Merlin, 2 Short eared Owl, 5 Wheatear, 13 Redwing, 3 Blackcap, 6 Chiff-chaff, Siberian Chiff-chaff Easington sewage works, 7 Goldcrest, 4 Firecrest, 6 Goldfinch and 4 Siskin.

Ringing: Robin, 3 Redwing, 1 Great Tit, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 1 Chaffinch, 2 Goldfinch, 1 Greenfinch, 1 Siskin.

29th March 2016 - Tuesday

29th Sunny spells and showers some of hail with force 4-3 WSW wind.

Birds on the move were 1 Lapwing, 3 Meadow Pipit, 1 Jackdaw and 2 Rook.
2 Black Brant and 1 Barnacle Goose were with 800 Brent and 2 pale bellied Brent at long bank. 2 Whooper Swan also in area along with 19 Wigeon, 6 Teal, 3 Goldeneye, 2 Gadwall, 43 Ringed Plover, 28 Avocet, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Short-eared Owl, 16 Pied Wagtail, 2 White Wagtail, 27 Redwing, 1 Blackcap, 9 Chiff-chaff, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Firecrest, 8 Goldfinch and 4 Siskin while the Siberian Chiff-chaff remained at Easington sewage works.

Ringing: 1 Robin, 2 Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush, 4 Redwing, 1 Chiff-chaff, 3 Goldcrest, 1 Chaffinch, 6 Goldfinch, 1 Siskin

28th March 2016 - Monday

A wild day with storm Katie producing force 6+WNW wind and heavy showers.

Poor weather and few observers led to reduced sightings but still decent migrant totals with 1 Firecrest, 4 Goldcrest, 14 Chiff-chaff, 2 Blackcap, 7 Wheatear, 21 Redwing and 17 Fieldfare.
Other bits of note were 6 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 2 Goldeneye, 9 Red throated Diver, 2 Great crested Grebe, 6 Moorhen, 1 Woodcock, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Long tailed Tit and 9 Goldfinch whilst in the evening 62 Pied Wagtail roosted at Easington gas terminal.

Ringing: 2 Blackcap, 5 Chiff-chaff, 1 Robin, 1 Tree Sparrow, 1 Chaffinch, 3 Goldfinch.

27th March 2016 - Sunday

Sunny spells with the odd shower force 5-6 SW-S wind.
Migration watch: 0620-1000.
The day finally arrived and a new era in the observatory history begins. Thankfully the rain held off and along with a great turnout of over 200 friends and supporters who turned up to look over the new building and watch Mike Dilger open the new observatory with many more watching on line. What a momentous day in our history. Thank you to everyone who has been along with us for this journey and let the good birding continue.

Yesterdays small arrival of migrants continued today with some showy Firecrest keeping many people very happy but there was plenty of good birds around for everyone to enjoy. Totals of 7 Firecrest (2 Point, 1 lighthouse, 1 Canal Hedge, 2 Sammys, 1 Easington) but also 10 Goldcrest, 13 Chiff chaff, 1 Black Redstart point, 1 White Wagtail at sammys, 1 Stonechat and 1 Woodcock.
Present were the 2 Black Brant, 16 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 1 Shoveler, 3 Goldeneye Kilnsea wetland, 13 Avocet, 24 Redwing, 5 Long tailed Tit, 8 Chaffinch, 4 Goldfinch, 7 Siskin, 55 Linnet and 8 Reed Bunting.
Birds on the move included 1 Wigeon, 7 Teal, 3 Common Scoter, 5 Red throated diver, 11 Gannet, 2 Lesser black backed Gull, 2 Auk sp, 1 Dunlin, 1 Guillemot, 51 Wood Pigeon, 3 Stock Dove, 26 Meadow Pipit, 9 Alba Wagatil, 3 Jackdaw, 2 Carrion Crow, 205 Starling, 2 Chaffinch, 3 Greenfinch, 2 Goldfinch, 2 Siskin, 32 Linnet and 14 Reed Bunting.

Cloudy and damp all day with some light showers and an increasing force 4-6 SW wind.
Seawatch: 0630-1030.
The final touches took place at the new observatory in preparation for the hotly anticipated opening.
A small arrival of migrants saw a great total of 5 Firecrest (2 Point, 1 Churchyard, 1 Sammys, 1 Kilnsea) but also 32 Goldcrest, 16 Chiff chaff, 2 White Wagtail at sammys and 1 Stonechat.
Present were the 2 Whooper Swan, 2 Black Brant, 17 Wigeon, 4 Gadwall, 29 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 5 Goldeneye Kilnsea wetland, 1 Greenshank, 12 Redwing, 3 Long tailed Tit and 28 Linnet
Birds on the move included 4 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 2 teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 54 Common Scoter, 5 Red throated diver, 1 Great northern Diver, 13 Gannet, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Lapwing, 1 Snipe, 1 Woodcock in, 1 Curlew, 33 Common Gull, 60 Black headed Gull, 7 Lesser black backed Gull, 1 Glaucous Gull and 5 Guillemot whilst passerine wise the first 4 Sand Martin of the year flew south.

25th March 2016 - Friday

A lovely spring day with plenty sunshine with a cool force 1-2 SW wind.
Migration watch: 0630-0830.
Birds on the move were 3 Red throated Diver, 12 Oystercatcher out east, 13 Curlew out east, 1 Marsh Harrier, 19 Wigeon out east, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Alba Wagtail, 3 Rook and 2 Siskin.
Present was 2 Whooper Swan, 1 pale bellied Brent, 2 Gadwall, 19 Teal, 3 Goldeneye, 12 Avocet, 1 snipe, 1 Woodcock, 1 Greenshank, 246 Redshank, 1 Great crested Grebe, 2 Short eared owl, 37 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 1 Black Redstart, 22 Redwing, 3 Chiff chaff, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Firecrest, 4 Long tailed Tit and 15 Linnet.
The nice weather encouraged a few butterflies out with 7 Peacock, 2 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Brimstone.

Ringing: 4 Blackbird, 1 Redwing, 1 Chaffinch, 2 Greenfinch, 1 Goldfinch.

24th March 2016 - Thursday

Mainly cloudy with a force 2 NW wind becoming W-SW.
Seawatch: 0645-0900.

The male Wheatear remained by the bluebell and the Firecrest was trapped and ringed at Kew. It is almost no surprise that an Egyptian Goose put in a spring appearance before flying off south, in what is becoming an almost annual visitor.
Birds on the move were 10 Wigeon, 16 Teal, 1 Common Scoter, 1 Red throated Diver, 3 Lesser black backed Gull, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Skylark, 12 Meadow Pipit, 7 Alba Wagtail, 2 Jackdaw, 15 Rook, 8 Carrion Crow, 22 Chaffinch, 1 Brambling, 4 Greenfinch, 14 Siskin, 13 Linnet, 1 Yellowhammer and 1 Reed Bunting.
Other bits of interest was 2 Whooper Swan, Black Brant in long bank, 4 Gadwall, 27 Teal, 1 Shoveler, 1 Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 2 Grey Partridge, 12 Avocet, 5 Fieldfare, 18 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest, 8 Chaffinch and 3 Linnet.

Spring is slowly arriving with the first Wheatear of the spring by the bluebell whilst a Black Redstart at the warren and a Firecrest at Kew.
Birds on the move were 3 Canada Geese, 4 Eider, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Curlew out east, 6 Meadow Pipit in, 3 Jackdaw, 1 Rook and 2 Chaffinch.
Other bits of interest was 2 Whooper Swan, 8 Greylag Geese, 2 Teal, 2 Goldeneye, 1 Short-eared Owl, 5 Avocet, 130 Golden Plover, 120 Grey Plover, 1 Woodcock, 3 Song Thrush, 1 Fieldfare, 7 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest, 10 Chaffinch and 11 Linnet.

22nd March 2016 - Tuesday

Sunny spells with a force 2-1 NW wind.

Birds on the move were 3 Common Scoter, 10 Red throated Diver, male Hen Harrier, 40 Herring Gull, 12 Meadow Pipit in, 6 Jackdaw and 2 Rook.
The first Firecrest of the spring was at sammys whilst other bits of interest was 2 Whooper Swan, 1 adult White fronted Goose with the Brents, 1 Barnacle Goose, 1 Goosander at sammys, 2 Woodcock, 6 Fieldfare, 3 Song Thrush, 12 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Chiff-chaff, 3 Long tailed Tit, 3 Siskin and 1 Yellowhammer.

Cloudy with occasional drizzle with a force 2-3 N wind.

A noticeable feature of the Brent Goose flock despite good numbers of birds present this winter has been the lack of juvenile birds, which makes the record count of 1820 birds all the more remarkable beating the previous count by 320!!!
Birds on the move were 44 Wigeon, 26 Teal, 5 Common Scoter, 1 Goldeneye, 1 Goosander, 18 Red throated Diver, 7 Gannet, 6 Cormorant, 4 Grey Heron, 7 Lapwing, 45 Black headed Gull, 123 Herring Gull, 3 Kittiwake, 2 Auk sp And 2 Meadow Pipit in/off.
Other bits of note was 2 Whooper Swan, 21 Greylag Geese, 271 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 42 Teal, 5 Goldeneye, 2 Red legged Partridge, 2 Jack Snipe, 3 Snipe, 2 Woodcock, 1 Greenshank, 8 Meadow Pipit, 1 Goldcrest, 1500 Starling, 30 Chaffinch, 1 Siskin, 35 Linnet and 9 Yellowhammer.

Bright and sunny all day with a force 2-3 NE wind.
Seawatch: 0700-0915, Mig watch: 0650-

Birds on the move were 3 Eider, 23 Red throated Diver, 1 Fulmar, 4 Guillemot, 1 Stock Dove, 2 Skylark, 8 Meadow Pipit plus 6 in off, 2 Rock Pipit, 10 Alba Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 6 Jackdaw, 6 Rook, 250 Starling, 7 Chaffinch, 3 Greenfinch, 3 Goldfinch,1 Siskin and 19 Linnet. It was a day of noticeable gull movement heading out east with 36 Black headed Gull and 654 Herring Gull.
Other bits of note was 2 Whooper Swan, 12 Teal, 2 Red legged Partridge, 730 Oystercatcher, 1 Woodcock, 1 Water Rail at the warren, 6 Skylark, 7 Meadow Pipit, 2 Rock Pipit, 4 Redwing, 2 Song Thrush, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Long tailed Tit, 5000 Starling and a Bullfinch at the warren.

16th March 2016 - Wednesday

Sunny all day with a nagging force 2 NNE wind.
Seawatch: 0700-0915.

Birds on the move were 2 Wigeon, 12 Red throated Diver, 1 Fulmar, 4 Guillemot, 1 Puffin, 5 Jackdaw, 1 Rook, 4 Chaffinch and 1 Siskin.
Other bits of note was 2 Whooper Swan, 1300 Brent Geese, 2 pale bellied Brent and 2 Black Brant, 289 Wigeon, 10 Teal, 82 Pintail, 460 Oystercatcher, 37 Lapwing, 1 Barn Owl, 14 Fieldfare, 4 Song Thrush, 18 Redwing, 2 Mistle Thrush, 1 Chiff-chaff, 1 Goldcrest, 4 Long tailed Tit and a male Bullfinch in Easington.

15th March 2016 - Tuesday

Cloudy and murky all day with some light drizzle and a cool force 2 NNE wind.
Seawatch: 0700-1000.

The frenetic pace of the work is maybe slowing down a little but the work still continues at Tharlesthorpe with yet more painting and the addition of a carpark for people staying at the Obs.

Present were the 2 Whooper Swan, 18 Greylag Geese, 1080 Brent Geese, 2 pale bellied Brent Goose and 2 Black Brant, 1 Great crested Grebe, 2 Song Thrush, 12 Redwing, 2 Chiff chaff, 3 Goldfinch and 3 Siskin.
Birds on the move included 8 Common Scoter, 11 Red throated diver, 7 Gannet whilst passerine wise 3 Meadow Pipit off the sea then north.

Sunny spells with a cool force 2 E-NE wind.

Present was 2 Whooper Swan, 30 Greylag Geese, 900 dark bellied Brent Geese, 1 Black Brant, 20 Pintail, 2 Eider, 1 Woodcock, 1 Greenshank, 3 Skylark, 2 Fieldfare, 2 Song Thrush, 20 Redwing, 1 Chiff chaff and 1 Long tailed Tit.

Present was 2 Whooper Swan, 3 Pink footed Geese, 44 Pintail, 2 Gadwall, 1 Shoveler, 9 Goldeneye, 12 Common Scoter, 80 Golden plover, 8 Avocet, 1 Jack Snipe, 2 Snipe, 1 Barn Owl, 14 Skylark, 2 Rock Pipit, 1 Black Redstart at Sandy Beaches (1st of spring), 1 Stonechat, 95 Redwing, 2 Goldcrest, 1475 Starling, 5 Siskin, 6 Yellowhammer and 4 Snow Bunting.

A murky start soon developed into a nice spring day clearing to give blue skies and a force 1 SE wind.
Seawatch: 0630-1145.
The nice weather has encouraged more passerines to move.
Totals were 15 Common Scoter, 3 Red breasted Merganser, 56 Red throated Diver, 3 Great crested Grebe, 1 Fulmar, 3 Cormorant, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Lapwing, 13 Black headed Gull, 604 Herring Gull, 1 Lesser black backed Gull, 3 Guillemot, 50 Wood Pigeon, 8 Skylark, 5 Alba Wagtail, 10 Jackdaw, 3 Rook, 2 Chaffinch, 3 Greenfinch, 17 Linnet, 2 Yellowhammer, 4 Reed Bunting and 2 Corn Bunting.
Present were the 2 Whooper Swan, 29 Greylag Geese, 1 pale bellied Brent Goose, 50 Teal, 12 Common Scoter on the Humber, 41 Pintail, 5 Avocet, 1 Woodcock, 13 Skylark, 4 Meadow Pipit, 3 Pied Wagtail, 2 Fieldfare, 2 Song Thrush, 40 Redwing, 2 Chiff chaff and 2 Long tailed Tit.

Ringing: 1 Kestrel, 1 Robin, 1 Blackbird, 2 Redwing, 1 Wren, 1 Chaffinch, 1 Tree Sparrow.

Rain until early morning then brightening up with a light force 2-1 E wind.

An increase in Thrush numbers and the 1st Chiff chaff of the spring.
Birds on the move were 2 Wigeon, 13 Common Scoter, 1 Goldeneye, 92 Red throated Diver, 15 Great crested Grebe, 2 Gannet, 1 Shag, 142 herring Gull, 1 Glaucous Gull, 2 Auk sp, 10 Chaffinch, 11 Goldfinch and 1 Snow Bunting.
Present was 2 Whooper Swan, 3 Pink footed Geese, 25 Greylag Geese, 2 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Grey Partridge, 2 Woodcock, 2 Kingfisher, 17 Song Thrush, 19 Redwing, 1 Stonechat, 1Chiff chaff at sammies point and 4 Goldfinch.
A bat sp seen flying around church field was identified as a Serantine Bat.

Ringing: 1 Dunnock, 2 Blackbird, 1 Song Thrush, 2 Chaffinch, 3 Goldfinch.

Cloudy with a few light showers with a cool force 3+ W wind.

Birds on the move were 15 Common Scoter, 32 Red throated Diver, 1 Gannet, 67 herring Gull, 12 Auk sp, 1 Guillemot and 1 Jackdaw.
Present was 2 Whooper Swan, 3 Pink footed Geese, 12 Greylag Geese, 621 Brent Geese, 1 pale bellied Brent plus a hybrid dark bellied/Black Brant, 62 Teal, 4 Goldeneye, 3 Avocet, 63 Lapwing, 200 Redshank, 1 Greenshank, 1Barn Owl, 5 Song Thrush, 6 Long tailed tit, 6 Goldfinch and 33 Yellowhammer.

Ringing: 1 Dunnock, 1 Blackbird, 2 Tree Sparrow, 2 Chaffinch.

7th March 2016 - Monday

Well we are nearly there but still have quite a lot of jobs to complete in readiness for the grand opening. The next work party will be held on Sunday March 13 2016 from 10am til 3pm. A covering of snow at dawn soon melted but showers all day with a force 3 NNW wind.

Moving over the sea were 11 Common Scoter, 50 Red throated Diver, 9 Gannet, 99 Herring Gull, 1 Kittiwake, 14 Auk sp, 5 Guillemot and 1 Puffin.
Birds present were 14 Greylag Geese, 250 Wigeon on Kilnsea wetland plus 58 Teal and 6 Goldeneye, 3 Black tailed Godwit, 1 Greenshank, 2 Stonechat, 2 Long tailed Tit, 3 Goldfinch and 1 Siskin.

Sunny spells and showers some wintry with a force 2 N-N W wind.

Birds on the move were 23 Common Scoter, 22 Red throated Diver, 3 Gannet, 6 Auk sp, 1 Guillemot, 2 Razorbill, 2 Jackdaw, 2 Rook and 1 Carrion Crow.
Present was 6 Greylag Geese, 700 Brent Geese, 1 pale bellied Brent, 1 Black Brant, 3 Avocet, 1 Black tailed Godwit, 1 Greenshank, 1 Short eared Owl, 1 Fieldfare, 3 Song Thrush, 250 Starling, 6 Chaffinch and 18 Linnet.

Ringing: 1 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush, 1 Bluetit, 3 Chaffinch, 1 Greenfinch.

5th March 2016 - Saturday

Moving over the sea were 1 Common Scoter, 7 Red throated Diver, 68 Gannet, 3 Fulmar, 1 Cormorant, 106 Herring Gull, 11 Kittiwake, 12 Auk sp, 6 Guillemot whilst 2 Jackdaw u-turned back north.
Birds present were 14 Greylag Geese, 250 Wigeon on Kilnsea wetland plus 6 Teal and 6 Goldeneye, 20 Ringed Plover, 160 Redshank, 1 Greenshank, 2 Stock Dove, 1 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Song Thrush, 20 Linnet whilst a Badger was seen on the road to Easington.

Wintry showers until mid morning with a force 2-3 W wind.

Birds on the move were 1 Shelduck, 1 Eider, 47 Red throated Diver and 8 Gannet.
Present was 12 Greylag Geese, 1 woodcock, 2 Stonechat, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Long tailed Tit and a Treecreeper .

Sunny spells clouding up later with a few showers with a force 1-2 W wind.

Moving over the sea were 210 Pink footed Geese, 4 Common Scoter, 74 Red throated Diver, 2 Great crested Grebe, 6 Auk sp, 1 Guillemot.
Birds present were 16 Greylag Geese, 500+ Brent Geese, 2 pale-bellied Brent, 72 Pintail at sammys, 10,000 Knot on the Humber, 1 Stonechat, 1 Song Thrush, 1 Long tailed Tit and 450 Starling.

Ringing: 1 Long tailed Tit, 2 Tree Sparrow, 1 Great Tit, 1 Chaffinch, 1 Greenfinch.

Present was 11 Lapwing, 12 Ringed Plover, 560 Starling and 2 Stonechat .
