Spurn Bird Observatory events in 2017

Following on from the success of the “Spurn School Of Birding” and “WaderTastic” we have further developed the events we offer and this year we have a packed calendar with new events on “Digiscoping” and “Rarity Finding” joining our established favourites. With more events than ever to choose from we are sure you’ll find something to inspire you, so please have a look at the following list and we hope to see you in 2017. More events may be added throughout the year, so please watch the news section here on the website and follow us on Twitter @spurnbirdobs.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PROCEEDS FROM EACH OF THE EVENTS WILL GO TOWARDS SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE BIRD OBSERVATORY.

Sunday 30th April 9:30am – 12:30pm, “Bird Photography for Beginners”
Join Justin Carr as he provides expert advice on the basics of bird photography including digiscoping. 3 hour session including refreshments, based in the observatory garden and nearby locations.
Price: £20 per person.
Number of places: Limited to 6 persons per session to ensure you get that personal touch.
(NB subject to demand, a second session from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm may be held)

Sunday 21st May 9am – 12noon, “3 hour Guided Walk”
Led by one of the observatory committee or regulars, covering the most popular locations within a mile or so of the bird observatory with an opportunity to witness bird ringing. Seek out and be shown the best of what birds are around. Mid May at Spurn usually means some scarce and rare birds are around. Route and schedule subject to weather and determined on the day by the leader.
Meeting point: to be announced.
Price £10, payable on the day.
Number of places: 8 persons with 1 guide (subject to demand 2 guides will be assigned, so offering up 16 places).
No registration required – turn up on the day.

Sunday 28th May 9am – 12noon, “3 hour Guided Walk”
Led by one of the observatory committee or regulars, covering the most popular locations within a mile or so of the bird observatory, with an opportunity to witness bird ringing. Seek out and be shown the best of what birds are around. Late spring at Spurn usually means some scarce and rare birds! Route and schedule subject to weather and determined on the day by the leader.
Meeting point: to be announced.
Price £10, payable on the day.
Number of places: 8 persons with 1 guide (subject to demand 2 guides will be assigned, so offering up to 16 places).
No registration required – turn up on the day.

Sunday 13th August 9am -1pm, “WaderTastic!”
Are you puzzled by Plovers and confused by Calidrids? If so, then this event led by Spurn Bird Observatory members Tim Jones and Jack Ashton-Booth will be perfect for you!.
Spend a little time to explore the diversity of wading birds the Humber Estuary, Kilnsea Wetlands and Beacon Ponds has to offer. Learn the basics of plumage identification, learn the characteristic calls and vocalisations, learn the skills to get closest to them and when and where to look for them ! With over 45 different wader species recorded at Spurn, including the 1st record of Stilt Sandpiper for Britain, there is no better place to get to grips with this unique family of birds. On the day there should be around 20 different species of wader for us to focus on, so you will take away a lot of new ornithological skills.

NB. Subject to demand, further ‘WaderTastic’ events could be held on Saturday 12th August and Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th August. Watch this space.

Saturday 16th September 9am – 5pm, “Finding and Identifying Rarities – Preparing for the Autumn”
Join British Birds Rarities Committee chairman and Spurn resident Paul French as he guides you through the top tips and pitfalls of finding the ‘megas’. Includes a half day in the field with useful input on field craft and searching techniques, with an indoor session on identification of some key species and possible new species for the future in Britain, including tips on how to produce field notes and that all important rarity description. There should also be an opportunity to observe some key wing formula details on birds trapped on the day. Cutting edge and a first for BBRC members and Spurn Bird Obs working in partnership.
For more experienced birders. Don’t forget to bring your notebooks!.

Monday 21st – Friday 25th August 5 day residential bird ringing experience  
Led by Spurn Bird Observatory warden Paul Collins and assistant warden Rael Butcher, with Spurn regulars Jack Ashton-Booth, Adam Hutt and Tim Jones.
A structured daily programme teaching safe and fun ringing practices, with instruction given on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis in a relaxed environment. As well as mist-netting for passerines, the residential will cover as many catching methods as possible, including wader and tern ringing at night (weather-dependent, of course).
Participants must be ‘T’ or ‘C’ permit holders.
Price – £200 inclusive of accommodation at the new observatory (excluding food which participants should bring for their stay or purchase locally). An £80 non-refundable deposit will be required to register.

Saturday 30th September 9:30am – 4pm “Spurn School of Birding – “Beginners 1 day Basic Birding Skills Workshop”
Aimed at beginners to birding, join Spurn committee member Nick Whitehouse and friends for some basic tips on how to approach birding, taking your identification skills to the next level. You’ll wish you joined this event years ago! Mainly field based with some informal classroom input all delivered with friendly supportive help, you’ll learn how to use all the hints and clues the birds are giving you.
No tests!! Just interesting and informative input and good fun. Hear also about how the bird observatory works and witness a bird ringing session.
The Spurn School of Birding Basic Birding Skills 1 day workshop is now in its third year.
Meeting place: Our hosts are Westmere Farm (just north of the new Spurn Bird Obs building, giving us good access to all the key birding sites)
Price £50 (Includes a hot buffet lunch, hot drinks and workshop notes to take away)
Number of places: Limited to 10 persons per day

Private Guided Tours are available from May to mid November.
Price: £30 for 3 hours for 4 persons or less. Additional guests £5 per head.
