SPURN WILDLIFE 50th anniversary edition

SPURN WILDLIFE 24 which will be published in early spring 2015 will be the 50th annual bird report produced by Spurn Bird Observatory.
It is very fitting that we have been graced by the presence of such a great bird for this golden event – the Masked Shrike. The Masked Shrike will be the cover photograph.

The second Spurn Migration Festival a great success!

Birdwatchers from across the UK and beyond gathered at Spurn National Nature Reserve for this year’s Spurn Migration Festival.

Spurn is renowned by birdwatchers as one of the best places in the UK to witness the autumn bird migration spectacle. Across the 5th, 6th and 7th of September 2014 Spurn hosted over 300 people at the second Spurn Migration Festival.

A few words about the Migration festival: Next Generation Birders

1) What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Migration’ (in relation to birds)
The first thing I think of when I hear the word migration definitely depends upon the season. Spring brings to mind the first Hirundines and Warblers of the year, the excitement of hearing the first Willow Warblers and Swifts! Autumn is all about the Wader passage with any muddy field having the possibility of migrating Waders dropping in. The geese and thrushes are not bad either, coming in to spend the winter here in their thousands, flying over head, often heard before they are seen, it is pretty impressive.
